As more institutions of higher learning offer and develop self-paced online learning experiences for students, they face challenges in engaging students who are participating in stand-alone classes without neither direct instructor nor fellow student interactions. Outside of considering the merit of self-paced online learning in the collegiate environment (something which is discussed at length in various higher education forums), this presentation will instead provide ideas for engaging students when collaboration with other students or encouragement from an instructor is removed from the learning environment. Self-paced online learning requires a high degree of motivation on the student's part, but sound instructional design and engagement strategies can improve student success and satisfaction. This presentation will focus on engagement elements and design of self-paced online learning. The ideas can also be applied to creating more engaging powerpoint slides for traditional classroom teaching settings.
